The Era of Psychedelic Music

Inspired by the sounds of the 60’s, below are 5 bands who formed in the 21st century, creating sounds of ambience and tranquil and making you feel as though you are floating on a cloud. The term - Psychedelic Music - pretty much describes itself. It is usually coupled with the image of colorful patterns and the usage of the drug LSD. It could wake your subconscious or act as a therapeutic platform to relax. 1. Tame Impala


Tame Impala is probably the face of modern psychedelic rock. Consisting of one man Grammy-nominated platinum selling multi-instrumentalist Kevin Parker, they have achieve widespread attention for their unique yet groovy bass sounds - most highlighted in their song “The Less I Know the Better”. Parker’s music is heavily influenced by 1960s & 1970s psychedelic rock with various production with delay, reverb and fuzz.

2. MGMT



MGMT was started by students Benjamin Goldwater and Andrew Vanwyngarden in 2002. Originally called the Management, they changed their name to MGMT after finding out that the name was already used. Their album “MGMT” carries the similar themes of psychedelic synths, drums and funky vocals that let the listener go on a trip of relaxation and joy. “Electric Feel” and “Kids” are some of their more well-known songs, usually heard in college and dorm parties. 3. Pink Floyd



Probably known as the godfather of psychedelic music where all the modern bands draw their influences from, Pink Floyd mind-bending drug-rock music has achieved phenomenal success around the world. Their album “Dark Side of the Moon” has some of the best psychedelic anthems from “Breathe” to “Comfortably Numb”. Pink Floyd is a must-listen for those who want to get to know the psychedelic genre. 4. Mac Demarco



Mac Demarco is a well-known Canadian singer/multi-instrumentalist known for his laid-back guitar-pop daydream and his quirky personality. The ambivalence in his album “Salad Days” is one of DeMarco’s defining music traits, especially heard in “My Kind of Woman” and “Blue Boy”. The album has achieved a score of 8.5 on Pitchfork and was announced Best New Music. So, for those who are laid-back and easy-going, there is no doubt you will love DeMarco’s work! 5. The Flaming Lips



The Flaming Lips has achieved 3 Grammy awards, making them one of the most successful bands of this genre. Something that makes them unique is that they have released a 24 hour Long song called “7 Skies H3” - which is a limited edition with only 13 copies. If you want to experience an out-of-the-ordinary musical journey, then The Flaming Lips might work for you!

 

Zoe is an avid fan of all kinds of music. Her primary instrument is the guitar but she is always passionately learning how to play other instruments such as the drums and keyboard. She is currently playing the bass guitar in a band and has been routinely involved in music since she was a child.
